A Head Gardener will oversee and run large and multiple Estates. They will ensure the smooth running and execution of the Principals’ requests across all gardens, with all garden staff reporting directly to the Head Gardener.
A Head gardener/Groundsman will have at least 3 years experience working in a similar role.
Our candidates will have a wealth of horticultural experience/training such as a City & Guilds Diploma in Horticulture, an RHS certificate as well as the ability to handle a range of horticultural machinery and hand-powered tools as well as some having a Full Pesticide Licence.
Range from £370 – £460 net per week typically for an 8-10 hour day, (Varies during winter months) Monday to Friday
Range from £395 – £460 net per week typically for up to a 10 hour day, Monday to Friday
Duties can include all or most of the following depending on your requirements:
Co-ordinating garden staff
Manage and supervise duties of Gardeners/Groundsmen
Recruit and manage exterior staff / contractors
Research and select garden and maintenance suppliers
Project manage large projects
Maintain perimeter and boundaries
Create weather resistant planting schemes
Create secure homes for livestock to prevent predator and fox attacks
Our Gardeners come from strong backgrounds in land management and are passionate about their gardens. They range from those who manage hundreds of acres to those who maintain informal, formal and manicured gardens that require on-going design.

For the Lawns:
Grass cutting and maintain formal garden lawns, estate land and fields
Prepare ground, soil and lay new turf
Build and Create:
Create a suggested planting plan
Build raised beds and herb gardens
Grow plants from seed within kitchen garden and formal garden
Redesign vegetable garden and perennial borders
Tree planting
Build fencing and general DIY tasks
Cultivate a glasshouse or kitchen garden to produce fresh fruit and vegetables
Maintenance and Estate Repair:
Ensure that woodlands, lawns, shrubs, flowers and landscaped gardens are cared for
Check health of plants, deal with pests and diseases in an organic way
Prune shrubs, dig, plant and weed flower beds and borders
Managing orchards and fruit trees
Create fresh flower displays for the house
Manage vegetable and fruit gardens (rotating crops, cultivate, harvest and prune)
Clean ponds and water features to ensure free of debris and efficient flow of water
Tend to Herbaceous borders, topiary and walled gardens
Prune and chop branches using chainsaw if necessary
Safe and effective use of insecticides and chemicals to maintain a healthy garden
Maintain swimming pool, ponds, tennis courts, and croquet lawns
Manage machinery and maintain irrigation systems
Maintain controls and maintenance of all lawn and garden machinery eg sit down/mowers and hedge trimmers
Sawing and splitting of firewood
Care of guard dogs
Ordering and collecting of animal feeds/supplies
